Identity Crisis

A few weeks ago I won a blog makeover courtesy of the wonderful Kay, whose blog is full of incredible design ideas and do it yourself projects. To say I am excited for some changes around the blog, is an understatement. I am really looking forward to having things look a bit more polished and organized, something I'm continually striving to do but always falling a bit short.

So, that leads me to a question. Do I remain Just A Small Town Girl or do I finally make the leap to Knowing The Difference?

Just A Small Town Girl came about when I first started blogging because, well, its what I am. Contrary to popular belief, the name doesn't come from the Journey song, but rather the song "Small Town" by John Mellencamp. Just a Small Town Girl is who I am and what I'll always be, even if I should one day make the move from my beloved small town to a big city. Small town girl is attached to both my email and twitter names. Its cohesive, constant, and comforting. Being from a small town is a big part of my identity both online and in real life.

Shortly after the new year last year, I purchased the domain name, knowingthedifference.com which is where you come to read this blog. Knowing the Difference is taken from the serenity prayer which is very important to me. I chose those words because the last line "...and the wisdom to know the difference" is absolutely beautiful. Knowing the difference is something I struggle with on a daily basis -- knowing what I can change and what I cannot change, knowing what I should do and what I shouldn't do, knowing what is best for me and what is best for someone else, knowing when to keep going and when I should stop. I really think that its a life long process. Knowing the difference is something we all have to figure out for ourselves as we all go about our journeys.

So I guess I am having a bit of an identity crisis and am torn between my two identities. Do I remain Just A Small Town Girl or do I fully embrace my domain name to become Knowing The Difference? Can I mesh the two and be Just A Small Town Girl Trying to Know the Difference (which seems incredibly too long)? If I do change do I need to change my email and twitter to make everything more cohesive? Thoughts?

In the meantime, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!

I am so excited for your make-over. It's a fun process to go through and hopefully you'll love the results!

Personally, I favor Knowing the Difference. Because, to me, while you may forever be a small town girl, your writing is so much bigger than that. And making the email change isn't as hard as you'd think (I did that when I bought somispeaks.com). Not sure about Twitter, though...

I vote knowing the difference for two reasons. 1.) my blog name is different than my domain name and I wish it wasn't, so I want that dream to come true for you :) and 2.) I think Knowing the Difference is a blog name that can grow with you and you can embrace for a long time. :)

I think that Knowing the Difference is a little better for a few reasons:

- Just a Small Town Girl literally strikes up music in people's heads & they will have strong feelings about that song that they'll associate with you. Personally, when I'm reading your blog I hear Journey's "don't stop believing" in my head the whole time. Because of Glee, & that it's the first line of the song, I think that probably this is what more people think of than the John Mellencamp.

- It's the same as your blog name. This will make it so much easier for people to find you eventually.

- It gives you flexibility. You can have a tag line that you can change when you like, like "Knowing The Difference: Just a small town girl trying to find her way" or "Knowing the Difference: moments between the big adventures of a small town girl"

I'm so excited to see your new design!! =)

ps - "SOMEWHERE IN THE NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!" That's where I got to in my head by the time I hit publish lol aren't you glad we're friends?

I am with the other commenters. Whether or not the blog name is from the Journey song or the John Mellencamp one, it does evoke that catchy Jounrey song immediately.

I think "Knowing the Difference" will set you apart a little, and take you away from the Journey song and will help your blog to become more cohesive.

Good luck with the makeover you lucky duck!

I completely agree with what Kyla said. I think you should go with Knowing the Difference (I especially like it now that I know the meaning behind it) and just have a tagline about being a small town girl and then you won't have to change your email/twitter if you don't want!

I'm excited to see your new design! That's great!

An interesting struggle. I like them both because they both represent parts of you. Though I agree with others that STG is sort of where you've been, while KTD is kind of what you're striving for? Can't wait to see the new look.

i think you should go with knowing the difference. i like the reason behind it. and because you might be a small town girl, but you know the difference.

happy weekend, love!

I love that song but do feel like Knowing the Difference would be more flexible. And since the site is already hosted there. I like Kyla's suggestion of something like "Know the Difference: Just a Small Town Girl," etc. Good luck!

I'm going to vote for Knowing the Difference. Like Kyla said, it will give you a lot of flexibility in the long run. Plus, you can always have, "Just a small town girl" be your tag line.

I like either site name, but I think my fave is 'knowing the difference'. Plus maybe if you went that route, you could do a monthly post about something that ties into that theme? Or however often. I think it's a great theme & something to think about. You are right - it is so hard to know the difference on so many things.

I cannot wait to see what your blog makeover looks like. It's going to be amazing! Go with the name that feels best for you. I think Knowing the difference is best so it matches your URL but both are a great representation of how great you are.

i think for you and your blog knowing the difference fits much better.

maybe your blog title could be knowing the difference with "from a small town girls point of view" as the tag line?

Good, because I hate Journey.

I personally like Small Town Girl, just because of the kind of quaint and bucolic feel it gives your blog. But that's just me. I'll still read it regardless of what it's called.
