Otherwise known as scaring the shit out of myself.
A few days ago, a friend asked me if I would house/dog sit for her while she went on a last minute trip to DC with her husband and kids. Because I adore her dog, Sophie, of course I said yes. I am always happy to help out and its always a fun change. Whats not to like about having a whole house to yourself, playing with a cute (yet, slightly hyper) dog and as an added bonus its just a few blocks from where I work (which means I am totally sleeping in a few more minutes in the mornings). Sounds great right?
Well its all fantastic, except for one little problem. I am kinda sorta scared. Yes, thats right. I'm scared. The house I am house sitting is an old beautiful three story, a far cry from the ranch style home I grew up (and still live) in. It simply lovely, comfy, and inviting--in the daylight. At night it takes on a whole different persona. The house creeks and groans both around me and above me. The fact that its raining and thundering out doesn't help. And can we just take a minute to talk about all the nooks and crannies in this house? There are a lot of places that someone could hide, just waiting for me to turn out the lights before they jump out and make their move.
It didn't help that I just watched a scary movie.
I'm sleeping with the lights on.
Don't judge me.

Oh no! Scary movie? What were you thinking??! My roommate is away for a month, and I'm halfway through my alone time. I have definitely gotten that scared-people-are-in-my-closet feeling, but just shut your eyes and you'll fall asleep soon. And sleep with the lights on.
Not judging at all! I chose my very first apartment for the fact that I could see all rooms at once when I opened the door so no one could hide and jump out and scare me. I'm much less nervous now, but I understand. New place, strange noises= high anxiety at night.
i do the same thing in anything that is older than 20 years!! totally understand, just have an extra glass of wine before bed and you wont hear a thing!!!
Ha, don't worry! I am the exact same way! It's one reason I've sworn off scary
...movies
Old houses do make noises!!!! Enjoy yourself!
I grew up in an old house...and it was SO SCARY at night. Especially after a scary movie! :)
My last apartment...which was a 1-bedroom with barred windows and a security system, directly below the nicest couple in the world scared me sometimes. I big scary house could easily make me dive under the covers. I suggest a slumber party.
I housesit once a year for some friends of mine who have those lovely (during the day) floor to ceiling windows but do NOT have curtains/blinds to keep people from peeking/peering in. Nevermind the fact their house backs up to the woods and that I'm in a more secluded part of StL. So... I totally understand where you are coming from.
I also made the mistake of seeing a totally scary movie when I was staying there and I literally got in the door, ran straight upstairs, locked the bedroom door, left the lights on and had two phones by me, just in case =)
Hehe, I love old houses, but that may be because I grew up in an older house and am very used to the weird noises they make. One thing that I found disconcerting about my apartment when I moved in was how quiet it was at night.
i can't do scary movies anymore!
i won't judge! ;)
Would NEVER judge you. I would have been hiding under the covers, or calling Big T to get over and hang out with me!!! Sadly, I have actually called my Mom to come and hang out with me because I was, I mean Kiersten was scared!!!!
I am sorry about all the acronyms and abreviations. I should put them on the sidebar so it is easier to understand. It truly is like speaking a second language!! Scarey that I know them all and they just "roll" off my tongue!
Thanks for the well wishes!! Please keep your fingers crossed for me.
haha sounds like me! I house sat once & left all the lights and radio on during the night! it was out in the middle of no where too..
I don't even believe in ghosts and I'd be scared!
what in the world were you doing watching a scary movie?????? :-)
i'm not gonna lie, one of my dreams was to someday be a successful woman... living alone. and then i got married. poor me. :) haha
I would too. No shame!!!
houses that creak freak me out too, i have issues, haha. good luck staying there!
Oh man I am so bad about that too. I hate being at a house alone overnight. Even my parent's house! I just can't get comfortable.
Arm yourself with a baseball bat!
Whatever, I would keep the lights on too!!!
Ha!! Oh don't worry Mandy, I'm such a wuss I watched a Ghost Hunters marathon last month and I'm still being woken up EVERY NIGHT with nightmares of horrible ghosts.
Note to Parents: When you take TV away from children until they're in the teens you will encourage their imaginations. To the point that they can't ever watch scary movies or seriously persue a career in mathematics because they are TOO DAYDREAMY.
Lesson learned. Thanks mom. lol
NO MORE SCARY MOVIES! Have the dog sleep with you too - it will help.
Hahaha! This totally made me giggle! I wish I was closer and then I would come and be scared with you. Honestly, I get the same exact way. I had to house-sit for some woman (and also watch her three dogs - shoot me now) a few times, and I would always freak out as soon as I was alone at night.
I usually ended up putting in a CD I liked (at the time, it was Josh Kelley) and play it loud enough to calm me. And I also left on way too many lights - oh, well. If their electricity bill was higher that month, at least I wasn't laying awake at night!
:)
Oh, and stay away from the scary movies, lady. I get freaked out in the DAYTIME from scary movies.
Hahaha! I love it! I house sat for my best friend's family a few years back. In a house I practically grew up in, and I totally did the same thing! That house gets scary at night! There are bumps and creaks. I locked the door and kept a light on.
Oh, and made people stay with me.
