Thanks and Giving

Thanksgiving preparations are well underway here at our house. We always go to my grandparents. My family and my mom's sisters and their families are all there. My grandparents make a huge turkey and the rest of us bring the sides and desserts, we always have more desserts than we can eat. I love getting up, lazily drinking coffee and watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade on tv. Over the years the turkey has been prepared various ways but always delicious. For some reason we always eat out dinner around one in the afternoon. My grandmother always insists the everyone must remain seated at the table for at least half an hour since it took so long to prepare the food. (My family are champions at sitting down, inhaling, and promptly leaving the table.) Afterwards the dishes are done, everyone sits around visiting (or avoiding other family members), and a few hours later there is a round two where leftovers are pulled from the fridge, we stand around the kitchen laughing and talking.

This year since I have started using the stove for something other than heating up canned soup, I decided to make something. After several great suggestions from fellow twitter-ers yesterday, I settled on Apple Butter Pumpkin Pies. Thankfully, there is just enough of my grandpaps homemade apple butter left in the fridge for a few pies. I hope they turn out!!

In the spirit of Thanksgiving and in keeping with the Charity Challenge, I just wanted to mention that Marlo Thomas kicked off the St. Jude Children's Research Hospitals annual Thanks and Giving campaign. The premise of the campaign is giving thanks for all the healthy children in your life by helping the ones who aren't. If you have a few minutes scroll through their most memorable moments. You can also follow them on twitter. Black Friday, take a minute at the cash register and donate a dollar, if you can. Bloggers are an amazing group of people and this holiday season they are doing some great things to give back to their community -- I will update more later in the week!

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!!
