"You Are Totally In My Circle"

Last evening I was sitting at a local coffee shop with one of my close friends catching up on the weeks events, talking about up coming plans, when my cell phone bleeped signifying a text message. I checked the phone, it was a text message from my newly 12 year old cousin telling me she had FINALLY (Finally? I had my first cell phone when I was 17!) received a "real" cell phone (as opposed to the pay as you go) for her birthday.

Fast Forward to our conversation today at her birthday party:

Birthday Girl: "Mandy, you are totally in my circle."

Me: "Uhhh, what?"

Birthday Girl: "You are totally in my circle! For my cell phone so now I can call you whenever I want."

Me, sarcastically: "Great!"

Birthday Girl: "I can call you all the time now and we can text back and forth and now I am almost as cool as you."

Me: "Birthday Girl, I am NOT cool. I am an old bitter individual."

Birthday Girl, laughing: "OH-EM-GEE Mandy, you are SOOO cool! You have your own car, you have a tattoo, you don't have to do what your mom says, AND you hang out at the coffee shop! Ohh, and you taught K (our 13 year old cousin) how to hawk a lugi! THAT IS SOOO COOL! You are so much cooler than our moms"

Me: "You have a point there, Birthday Girl, that was cool."

Birthday Girl: "Thats why you are totally in my circle. I can't wait to text you tomorrow morning when I'm on the school bus."

So there you have it. I have reached the epitome of cool, at least in the eyes of my 12 and 13 year old cousins. I do my best to teach them the important things in life: that yes, despite what their parents tell them, they CAN get a tattoo or body piercing when they turn 18; that eating raw cookie dough will not cause them to die of salmonella; that long, dangley earrings will not stretch their earlobes down to their shoulders; and yes, I may or may not have taught the 13 year old how to hawk a lugi. My attempts at corruption have landed me "in the circle."

Looking back, their mothers (my aunts, who are only 12 and 8 years older than me) were the ones who were "cool" to me. They were the reason I knew how to peg my pants, give myself sky high bangs while using the hair dryer and a can of Aquanet, that ice cream could be eaten for dinner as long as we didn't tell Nan, and if my memory serves me correctly, it was one of them who taught me how to mortify my mother by saying "Hey Mom! Watch this!!!" before snarking back some snot and letting it fly. At the time, I definitely thought they were much cooler than my mom. Its going to take some getting used to, my new found coolness. But I am glad that I am the cool one for them, just like their mom's were the cool ones for me. Everyone should have someone like that in their lives. If I had a cell phone back when I was 12 my aunts totally would have been in my circle.

Who would you have put in your circle back when you were a young teenager?

Justin Timberlake would've been in my circle when I was that age....not because I didn't have friends or anything...but because it's Justin. Nuff said! :)

I would have put my Aunt in my circle as she was my savior from my parents who, at the time, were driving me out of my mind....

I love how she is going to text you when she gets on the bus.

I think all 5 of the New Kids would have been in my circle.

*Sigh* I wish I was cool enough to be in someone's circle...

No, wait. No I don't. That would mean people would always be calling me and disturbing my bitter silence.

My aunt anita would be in my circle. I thought she was so cool and worldly.

I'm laughing Mandy. Did your grandmother tell you about salmonella and the ear lobe deal? My grandmother said that to me many times. She was so dissapinted when I pierced my ears. I let Asa eat all the raw batter of anything he wants. (I wouldn't though:)

Aww, that's hilarious. Both of my brothers would have been in my circle. They were away at college and I thought it was cool when I got to visit them on the weekends.

I think I would have just stuck to putting some of my friends and family members in my circle. I still hardly use my cell phone, so I can't imagine a younger version of me in today's world would have obsessed over a cell phone.

Me? In my circle? *thinks hard*

I don't know, ask me when I'm not a teenager anymore ;)

Kidding, kidding. I'm a "young woman" now... And a few years back I'd add my cousin to it.

She's like 20 years older than me, but she lived the great life (thanks to her rich parents)!! She travelled around the world with her friends, didn't work, wasn't married...

Now, I know she was pretty much useless. Now, she is married and has 2 kids and just moved back to El Salvador from Wisconsin... In spite of that, I still love her and am sometimes jealous ;)

HAHA! I loved that! You are teaching them very good lessons!

For me, it would have been my older sister and my cousin. Granted my cousin was only two weeks older than me, but she grew up in Manhattan which I thought was just the coolest thing!

Aww that's cute. Kids. I don't know who would have been in my circle, probably my group of friends that I had at the time since I talked to them the most.

Ahhh! I love it! Isn't it great when someone younger than you thinks you're just the coolest thing ever? I do. Heehee.

And my aunt would've definitely been in my circle. My sisters and I idolized her. She was in her late 20's/early 30's, worked at Nordstrom and had the coolest leggings and lacy socks, always had bright red lipstick on, and bought us the best presents.

It's kind of funny, looking back. :)
