All You Need Is Love

I read this on Michelle and the City’s blog ages ago. I emailed it to myself and just found it while cleaning out my inbox. Seems like a good day to write my own....

I love the picking the first blueberries off the bush, when they are perfectly ripe and the way they make the sides of my mouth pucker with their bittersweet taste. I love standing out on the deck, in the early hours of the morning in early spring or late fall, tilting my head toward the sky and exhaling deeply so I can watch my breath cloud in the cool air. I love attending Ohio State football games, the electricity in the stadium, they way the crowd erupts when the band does script Ohio and the sousaphone player dots the i. I love evenings when all is quiet except for the sounds of nature when I can be alone with my thoughts. I love homemade mountain blackberry jam and the way it tastes on crackers. I love reading anything and everything.

I love listening to music really loud, singing like I can carry a tune, and dancing around like I have some semblance of rhythm. I love sitting down by the river, watching it flow onward, knowing that my life, like the river is in constant motion, even when I feel its not. I love all different color gerber daisies and having freshly cut lilacs in the house so I can smell them every time I walk by. I love making memories. I love bonfires and making s’mores, but only after I've caught the marshmallow on fire and eaten off the burnt part because they are gooier that way. I love when orchestras play the overture of a musical and watching the curtain rise.

I love warm apple butter fresh from the big copper kettle, cooked outside over an open flame on a crisp fall day. I love honey barbeque wings and fried pickles washed down with a cold beer. I love driving down the highway and seeing a dog with its head out the window, eyes closed and ears flapping in the wind. I love going into used bookstores, browsing the shelves always hoping to come across a first edition or rare book, even though I never do. I love pedicures. I love long drives into the country, taking a road I've never taken before just to see where I end up. I love the satisfaction I feel when I shoot a clay target and it shatters into nothing when hit just right.

I love phone conversations that last until the early hours of the morning. I love the sound of the ocean crashing on the beach and staring out at the horizon line where the water and sky meet. I love laughing until I cry. I love the sounds of kids running through wide open country fields because it reminds me of my own childhood. I love picking dandelions that are long gone and blowing the white seeds left and making a wish. I love sunsets and sunrises, the way the sky turns that brilliant shade of pink, yellow, and purple. I love hearing the rain on the window pane and thinking of someone special. I love kicking off my shoes and wading into the creek, feeling the cool water and rocks underneath my feet. I love hearing a song that touches my heart, brings tears to my eyes and makes me feel things I usually try to repress. I love taking pictures, capturing moments in time and smiling when I see that moment later down the road.

I love knowing that there is something greater than myself out there and that anything is possible.

I challenge you to make your own list the only catch; you can't include a single person you know on your list. No "I love the way my husband laughs" or "I love hearing my little girl call for me." It'll be tough, I know. But this particular little exercise is about stripping away everyone who defines you and figuring out what you (not his partner; not their mother/daughter/sister/friend) love.

I remember when everyone was doing these lists, and they were so charming. I'm so glad you're reviving it!

Thanks! Its harder to write than one would think. And I figured it was time to do a post on something other than the Olympics. :-)

Jess -- I only read the one from Michelle and the City's and the link she had in her post. I hope some others do them!

Oh I can totally do this. It's a great challenge. I also love to listen to loud music and sing like I can carry a tune!! That's my favorite.
