Mission Impossible

Big T's 50th birthday is in December. 50. The big five-oh. Thats a pretty important birthday and seeing as how my mother didn't stop at 25 like myself, cause for celebration, especially since she is planning on counting backwards after fifty.

I have been threatening to throw her a big blow out bash, but she has been adamant about not wanting a big party with black "over the hill" balloons and cheesy gifts. Actually, she resorted to the Bill Cosby philosophy of " I brought you into this world and I can take you out of it" if I threw her a party. I'm still thinking dinner with some of her close girl friends but just a small dinner party and no right of passage cane or I'm 50 banners. I still want to make her 50th a memorable one though so I thought it would be fun to take her somewhere for a fun birthday weekend. I offered Atlantic City, New York......there was a reason not to go to each one. I offered a spa weekend, asked her if there was someplace she and my stepdad wanted to go...all to no avail.

We were discussing options again this afternoon via emails. She told me she didnt want a bunch of money spent on her. But that she wouldn't mind doing something totally outrageous. Now keep in mind, this is my Big T we are talking about here. She led a sheltered life until she had kids, then we taught her everything we knew. While Big T is a totally kick ass mom, she's not really the white water rafting or ziplining type. After kicking around places we had been previously on mother/daughter excursions, she decided on what she wants to to do make her 50th year a memorable one......she wants to attend a taping of Oprah! Which would be great and neither of us have been to Chicago and its only about 5,6 hours away which would be perfect for a long weekend and much more manageable than say Barry Manilow in Vegas (which is what I was pulling for, but again, she didn't want us to spend all the money). So off to the Oprah site I go.....yeah, apparently getting tickets to a taping is pretty much next to impossible.

However, my Big T is only turning 50 once so I am determined to somehow get tickets to a show. Has anyone ever gone to a taping of the Oprah show? The website says that audience reservations are closed for the current season, but that I could email about cancellations. Anyone have any idea how that works? Really, its taken me 7 months to get an idea out of her and now, well, I HAVE to get tickets....

I know how you can get tickets to "Jerry Springer" but not the big O, sorry. If you come to Chicago you HAVE to have deep dish pizza. I demand it!!!!!

What I'll do is send out the word to my other Chicago bloggers to see what I can come up with for you.

My grandfather would be your new best friend if you told him how to get tickets to Springer. If I come to Chicago, the trip WILL involve a deep dish pizza!

Thanks for sending out the word, I appreciate it. Have you ever gone to a taping?

My aunts went to a taping and even got to ask one of the girls a question

i've been trying to get tickets to Oprah for YEARS. the deal is, each month (starting in late august) they will give you a date and phone number to call for tickets, for the following month. They don't give you much warning (ex. announcement goes up thursday, the date is the next monday). So, my advice is to bookmark the page and check it regularly. And then you call during the designated times and PRAY you get through. I've never accomplished it. Always busy or "all circuits are busy". basically, I've decided you have to know someone or be SUPER lucky.

Good luck!

How cool is that?

Chickbug--Late August? Woohoo. That gives me hope..I was worried it was finished for the year. I know all about stalking websites for information, site is book marked and stalking has begun....I did that for the QVC Beauty Bash and for the Wicked tickets...I actually had both my cell phone and one of my work extensions in an attempt to get the best Wicked ticktets....
