Because I Knew You....

Over the weekend I purchased the Wicked soundtrack. The song For Good made me think of the people who had a lasting impact on me, but aren't necessarily in my life any longer. (Song on the sidebar.)

I've heard it said that people come into our lives for a reason bringing something we must learn and we are led to those who help us most to grow if we let them and we help them in return. Well, I don't know if I believe that's true but I know I'm who I am today because I knew you.

It well may be that we will never meet again in this lifetime so let me say before we part so much of me is made of what I learned from you. You'll be with me like a hand print on my heart and now whatever way our stories end I know you have re-written mine by being my friend.

Who can say if I've been changed for the better? Because I knew you: I have been changed for good.

* We spent many sleepless nights giggling and watching movies, roller skated through the church basement, and ran through the dark sanctuary half scared out of our minds. Our imaginations often got the better of us. We spent summers daydreaming, planning, and exploring. My trees in my backyard became our enchanted forest. The attic in your house our own personal Narnia. My imagination and creativity grew by leaps and bounds. Because I knew you.

* We grew up together from the time we were in diapers. Inside jokes, secret handshakes, braided friendship bracelets, drawing blood from our fingers to become "blood sisters." Late night talks on the back porch by candle light until the sun came up the next morning. There wasn't much we didn't share. Then we grew up and apart, and somehow found our way back to each other. I learned that we dont have to give up our childhood friends just because we become adults. Because I knew you.

* You taught me that a job worth doing, was worth doing right the first time. That if I worked hard enough and had patience I would eventually figure it out. That if I stopped talking and really listened I would learn so much more. I developed a strong work ethic. Because I knew you.

* You were my first roommate and together we discovered not only an amazing city, but also ourselves. The people we were just starting to be. We shared many crazy times from getting lost on the subway, to a breath taking fourth of July, to late night talks on the balcony with the Washington Monument in the distance. We both understood the changes that we underwent that summer and knew that we weren't going home the same people we were when we came. I learned that our lives can change but you can always go home again. Because I knew you.

* You taught me compassion and probably had the most profound impact on my life. I came to you when I was confused and lost, you always helped me find the right path again. You didn't just teach me a language you taught me about life. You taught me to question my beliefs and make sure it was me who really believed, that I wasn't just believing because someone said I should. You taught me to be a nonconformist, even when others tried to bring me down. I hope you knew that I am a better person today. Because I knew you.
